About African-American Collective Theater
With origins at Boston University in the early 1970s, African-American Collective Theater (ACT) relocated to Washington, DC in 1976 under its current name and continued to present new and classic African-American theater.

In May 1992, inspired by the very first DC Black Gay Pride Weekend a year earlier, ACT performed the play "HeartBeats" and began a tradition of producing a showcase of new LGBTQ-themed theater by its Artistic Director, Alan Sharpe,  on the Sunday evening of  DC Black Pride Weekend.

Over the decades, this annual production has evolved into the primary fundraiser for ACT's theater and film projects supporting its artistic mission to increase visibility and provide a broader, more complex and affirming range of images for, and to,  the African-American LGBTQ community.
